•Teachers pushed to Call off strike

protesting Anglophone teachers in Cameroon have have come under pressure to call off their sit down strike action. After a series of futile meetings, government through prime minister Philemon yang failed to woe teachers to call off the strike and go back to the class room.Though PM yang failed to convince the striking teachers he promised to put in place an institutional frame work to study and propose solutions to the the concerns raised, which he did.
Headed by Prof. Ghoghomou paul Mingo, the first meeting between the adhoc committee and leaders of the teachers trade unions ended in a deadlock as either parties came out of the meeting in Bamenda looking in different directions. The Secretary general of Cameroon Teachers Trade union CATTU,Mr Tassang Wilfred speaking after meeting said "the meeting was just another impasse, the strike continues
"
Meanwhile Prof Ghoghomou, weeks after the failed talks accused teachers of raising other issues unconnected to education. To him,the teachers must call off the strike before any negotiation can continue.
In reaction, the teachers say government did not ask them to go on strike hence have no locus standi to ask them call it off. They however promised to proceed to another level with the sit in strike action if government continues to play pontius pilate.
The teachers embarked on  a sit down strike about three weeks ago to protest against the continues marginalization and francophonistion of Anglo Saxon system of education. They are demanding government to apply purely Anglo Saxon policies in anglophone schools from nursery to university level.
It should however be noted that, following governments lukewarm attitude in  addressing the issues raised, the teachers went into a synergy with anglophone lawyers who had long downed tools in protest of a systematic francophonisation of the Anglo Saxon legal system. The lawyers, the teachers, trade unionist, civil society et al of anglophone cameroon joined their voices in one basket to demand for a return to a two state federation in the country as was the case before the masquerade referendum of 1972 that fused west cameroon now referred to as north west and south west region into the french speaking republic of  Cameroon. They have the conviction that only a two state federation can safeguard the Anglo Saxon identity from extinction in a dominantly french speaking country.
